Catalonian Independence Parade, Barcelona, Spain

The 11th September 2014 was the 300th anniversary of the siege of Barcelona. It saw Catalonians gather across central Barcelona to celebrate their distinctive culture and demand independence from Spain. Attendance was estimated at almost two million people. In this series of photographs, covering miles of Barcelona's streets, I captured the parade as it developed throughout the day.

By juxtaposing the more traditional method of black and white 35mm film with digital colour photography in this series, I aim to reflect the interplay between the old and the modern in contemporary Catalonian society. Through weaving the plethora of street scenes through both photographic mediums, I hope it conveys a sense of enduring Catalonian culture.

It was fascinating to see so many people of all generations so willing to engage with and support centuries of Catalonian tradition. Even as an outsider, I was easily drawn into the collective atmosphere of unity and solidarity, the smiles, the noise and the chanting: 'i - inda - indapendencia!'
