SOUNDTRACKS

Soundtracks, Music Beds & Jingles

Any film, animation, podcast or radio show can benefit from music that has been especially tailored to fit its context, tone and ambience. Accompanying visuals and spoken word with bespoke, responsive audio allows the dynamics of your content to breathe and deepens its impact on viewers and listeners. Uniquely crafted audio is essential to forging lasting impressions - memories - in the minds of your audience, something which the impersonality of over-sourced loops rarely achieve.

We live in a jungle of mood-shifting sounds that can nudge our subconscious, placing us anywhere between calm and excitement, contemplation and motivation, security and disturbance, optimism and dissociation, and much more.

Weaving in these states of mind with visuals and spoken word is a challenge met with an array of musical instruments, a 70GB library of infinitely modifiable sampled and synthesised sounds, and knowledge distilled through years of passion for music.

The playlist above features soundtracks produced for a number of projects, including short documentary films about a dementia action group in London and a Costa Rican community project, a Courtauld Institute of Art exhibition teaser and promotional videos for conferences and charities or other organisations.

The video below features a soundtrack of music and sound effects I produced for a 20-minute animation about dreams experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

PRODUCTION

Mixing & Mastering

The mixing and mastering phase of any project presents the exciting creative challenge of balancing the urge to perfect sounds with the desire to preserve others. It is a process during which each adjustment opens a cascade of further pathways towards an end result.

Getting to know your influences and points of reference plays a vital role in this process. This occurs whether mixing and mastering songs (individually or as part of a set), spoken word or soundtracks, and helps as we work towards reaching the envisaged sound.

Musical Direction & Development

Working together to shape an overall sound or direction, whether general or for a body of songs, is another avenue. This can also include input into the creation of melodies, progressions and arrangements, as well as ideas for instrumentation and even contribution of drums, guitar, vocals, keys, bass at recording stage if desired.

This could also take a more peripheral form such as feedback on compositions on the basis of demos or other recordings. Combined with this or independently, a technical evaluation of mixes or masters at any stage is offered, aided by a selection of industry-standard audio analysis tools and, of course, the human ear!

Remote Recording

I am available to provide a portable recording set-up for impromptu, studio and live environments to capture music, spoken word (including podcasts, radio features and pre-recorded presentations) and ambient audio, both indoor or outdoor.

The playlist above contains examples of my music production from a few albums and EPs I have recorded, mixed and mastered.
